Daily Fly Splat - 08/13/2008

I tied this fly for the LL Salmon and Lake Trout in the shallows of any body of water that contains Alewife. It is a mix of many Blue Smelt patterns but tied extra thick to imitate the broad body of the Alewife.

Blue Alewife (Created based on several other patterns)

Hook: Long Shank Heavy Wire Sizes 1/0 - 8
Weight: Wire Wraps - entire length of hook shank or your local legal limit
Thread: 6/0 or 8/0, Black
Body: Flat Tinsel
Overwing: Light Blue Deer Tail
Wing: Dove Grey Deer Tail
Underwing: 4 to 6 strands of Krystal Flash folded in half and trimmed longer than the deer hair
Throat: White Deer Tail
Notes: Don't be afraid to use lots of Deer Hair for this - Alewives are broad shouldered fish and should appear to have a very wide silhouette. Tie slightly more sparse for Smelt Immitation

Variation:

Uses Peacock Hurl as an overwing and has small amount of red mixed with the white underwing.
